Hurricane Season

9/23/2019

The 2019 hurricane season is once again causing damage and inflicting lots of changes from cruise lines.  Hurricane Dorian so far has done the most damage this season hitting Freeport and Grand Bahamas with devastating damage to the island nation.  Cruise lines have been forced to change itinerary's and move ships around to allow passengers a good week, but also to provide support to the island.  Which the cruise lines have all pitched in. Cruise lines are sending cruise ships with food and supplies and dropping them off, and donating millions of dollars into rebuilding these islands.  Hopefully the cruise lines will continue until Freeport is functional as a stop again.  Freeport deserves it as it has helped the cruise lines create millions in profits over the decades.

Things to keep in mind when booking a cruise during hurricane season, August to December.
Will I get stuck out at sea for longer than my original cruise:  So far this season many ships ended up extending their cruise, the Harmony of the Seas extended a 7 day cruise into an 11 day cruise.
Will I end up with a shorter cruise:  Since the Harmony of the Seas extended into Thursday, this impacted the next sailing and they ended up only receiving a 4 day cruise.  Yes they received compensation for the shorter vacation, but as a traveler do you really want a 4 day cruise when you had planned for 7?
Will I miss or even see a single port on my original itinerary:  This happened as well, we had cruises end up on totally different voyages than they were expected.  From cruises going into Bermuda and Canada instead of the Bahamas, to cruises going to Eastern Caribbean instead of Western.  Each of these changes are all written out in your cruise documents, but are you really wanting to miss every port or even 1 stop you are looking forward to seeing.
Can I change my Airfare: Even if you are totally ok being extended for your week, will you be able to change my airfare to complete my trip.. Airlines vary in how they will help you in changing your tickets, from southwest who will help you make several changes to assist you in moving dates around, to American who will only allow a change and if they cant fly out of the city you are leaving from.  This can be the most challenging change of any, and can cause stress if you are on a cruise ship trying to change these parts of your cruise.

This is why a travel agent is helpful I guide you through all of these issues.  I also am there when these things happen while you are on your cruise.  Its a lot easier for me to deal with the airlines than you while hundreds of miles from shore.
